Charles Manson, the 1960s cult leader whose followers committed murder and terrorized the Los Angeles community, died Sunday of natural causes.

CNN reports, “The diminutive and charismatic Manson orchestrated a wave of violence in August 1969 that took the lives of seven people, spawned headlines worldwide and landed him and his “Manson Family” of followers in prison for most of the remainder of their lives.”

The Associated Press described Manson’s most infamous crimes, saying the hippie cult leader “orchestrated the slayings of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six other people, butchered at two homes on successive August nights by intruders who scrawled ‘Pigs’ and ‘Healter Skelter’ (sic) in the victims’ blood.”

Manson served nine life terms in California prisons and was denied parole 12 times.

Winners of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarships — one of America’s best known higher education honors — were announced Saturday.

Among the 32 winners are  “ten African-Americans, the most ever elected in a U.S. Rhodes class; African and Asian immigrants; other Asian, Muslim, and Latino Americans; an Alaskan Native (Aleut); a transgender man,” according to a press release from the Rhodes Trust,”and four from colleges that have never before elected Rhodes Scholars in the 115 years of the United States Rhodes Scholarships (Hunter College, CUNY; Temple University; the University of Alaska Anchorage; and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.”

The scholarships provide a full-ride for two or three years of study at the University of Oxford in England and some of the awards cover four years.
